Gisle Nataas — Architecture as Instrument
Gisle Nataas is a Norwegian architect and sound artist whose work transforms architecture into musical instruments. Through field recordings, resonance, and vibration, he creates live performances and sound installations where buildings themselves generate the soundscape.
His ongoing project Architecture as an Instrument bridges architecture, sound art, and performance — revealing the hidden voice of space and material. The project has been presented in over forty concerts and installations across Europe, including Malmö, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Prague, Venice, Tórshavn, Barcelona, Bergen, and at the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival.
Born in Bergen and based in Oslo, Nataas holds a degree in architecture from the Bergen School of Architecture and the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. He is a member of the National Association of Norwegian Architects (NAL)and the Norwegian Society of Composers (NKF). His latest LP, Architecture as Instrument / Fehn (2025), explores the acoustic legacy of architect Sverre Fehn.
NATAAS/ is a architecture and sound art studio established by architect Gisle Nataas and registered as a company in Norway with organization number NO 924 369 019.
